In December 2002, 1700 former employees of IIT Research Institute established Alion Science and Technology by acquiring most of IITRI's assets from its parent organization, the Illinois Institute of Technology. The employees named their new for-profit, 100% employee-owned company Alion.

The R&B Laboratory continues to maintain its status as an independent test lab but now is in the unique position of offering its customers the backing and resources of a large company, while maintaining the flexibility and responsiveness of a small business.

The R&B Laboratory is located in suburban Philadelphia, PA, 20 miles from Philadelphia Airport.
